Why Samba?

Samba is music, samba is dance, samba is community.

Samba comes in various musical forms; partido alto, pagode, batuque, batucada, samba de roda, samba reggae and is perhaps best known globally for the fast paced samba that swelters from the carnivals in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. We touch on various forms within this diaspora which is samba, but focus on the carnival form referred to as Rio style samba and samba no pé. This refers to the fast paced and energetic footwork of dancers in sync with the many instruments that form a bateria (drumming section) to create the euphoric sound and atmosphere that is carnival samba.

For the dancers, this style of samba is essentially an improvisational dance form where people dance together in a constant game play reacting to each other, to the music and to the spectator. After all, carnival is a cultural phenomenon born in the streets where the boundaries between performer and audience are blurred into a more fluid and inviting relationship, where bystanders become participant and performers the instruments of their engagement. So no partner needed, women dance with men, men dance with men and women dance with women. In the form of carnival, there are however plenty of opportunities for choreography, and joining a section of carnival led by a professional dancer is just as fun. There’s room for all your dancing preferences, soloists, duos and groups in unison.

Similarly, the bateria provides opportunities for every different kind of drummer. From the technical challenge of a tamborim to the free-flowing improvisation of the repique, there’s a different instrument for every personality, all bound together by that sense of communal playing, where so many varied and intricate parts combine through playing together, to create a spectacular sound.

The buzz of playing live music can displace any winter blues or summer stress, we have a laugh, take play and fun seriously, so come and get into a groove with us and knock your self out with our funky bateria breaks, so popular we’ve been copied in Australia! Through improved stamina and co-ordination, you will learn to swing to a groove, play a rhythm, sing a song and smile at the crowds all at the same time.

Why not attend one of our drumming workshops? You don’t even need to bring an instrument, we have plenty that you can use!

Samba is also a fantastic way to keep fit and stay in shape!

Whilst working your cardiovascular system, Samba will also get you moving in all the nooks and crannies of your body that you may not normally use so much. Samba can improve your co-ordination, spatial awareness, stamina and harmonise your body through rhythm. With one rhythm at your feet, one at your hips, and another from your shoulder blades to your finger tips, you can learn all of this as well as learning to master singing a melody. You are guaranteed a good sweat as if you’ve just had a good work out but with less effort, and learn something more enjoyable and wider than a few steps here and a few steps there.
