Competition Rules

If you are intending to take part in the competition, please notify us at when you submit your entry.

The song should be all or mainly in Portuguese, but may include a verse/chorus/couple of lines in English. We do encourage this in your entry.

Uploaded to Soundcloud

All demos will be posted on the LSS Soundcloud shortly after the deadline, so that members and judges can hear them in the week leading up to the competition.

Music Arrangement

Entrants are not being asked to make a bateria arrangement but to write a musical one – the lyrics and the melody.

MP3 Demo

All entrants are to provide a demo MP3  to no later than 23.59 on Friday 9th March 2018. These mp3 will be distributed online for LSS members and the general public to hear.

All entrants must supply a copy of the lyrics in Portuguese and English (in an email or attached as a text document – txt, rtf, doc, docx, odt chorus parts highlighted in bold). There is no need to provide an elaborate demo with full bateria – all that is required is a basic demo of the song (vocal, cavaco and if possible a pulse beat).

There is no prize money for the winner of the competition, but your song will be sung by the members and guests of the London School of Samba at Notting Hill Carnival and played throughout the course of the 2018/2019 Carnival season to thousands of people.

Upon receipt all submissions will become the property of the London School of Samba . The winning submission may be modified from the original version. This will be to fit the criteria of the school’s needs. The winning competitor will be notified if this is the case.

The copyright of the song will belong to the London School of Samba. Royalties from any potential sale of the song will be reinvested into the school as a charitable organisation to further promote and encourage more people to participate in the schools activities and promote samba, Brazilian culture and British community spirit. The song writers will be credited for their songwriting entry.

Judge Criteria

The judging criteria are available at prior the competition event.

All entrants of the competition have the opportunity to perform the song at the competition – or to arrange for this to happen. For its presentation, entrants should arrange for the enredo to be accompanied by their own puxador and cavaco and will be supported by the LSS bateria. Entries submitted by recording only will not be played at the live event, but the songs will be judged in the same way as those that are played live on the night.

We encourage contestants to attend the competition event, if you they attend but their entry (song) will still be judged along with the other entries by the judges but will hold less sway by the members part of the vote on the night of the event.

The LSS reserves the right to hold another round (in public or in private) if the number of entries are above or below what the London School of Samba requires for a public Samba de Enredo Competition event.
